Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi (YDÜ), Near East University, is a foundation university founded in Lefkoşa in 1988 by Dr. Suat Günsel and is now the largest higher education institution in Northern Cyprus. With over 25,000 students from more than 78 countries, 16 faculties and a wide graduate structure, it is recognized as one of the leading academic centers in the region. The university's Faculty of Medicine is listed in the Avicenna Directory, which lists accredited medical schools worldwide; the Near East University Hospital on campus is a fully equipped training and research hospital designed in accordance with JCI accreditation criteria. The faculties of dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and law are also among YDÜ's strengths. The applied artificial intelligence center and a large library with over 150 million electronic resources are important components of the research infrastructure. The large campus near the city center of Lefkoşa includes an Olympic swimming pool, sports facilities and modern dormitories. A full member of the European University Association (EUA) and the International Association of Universities (IAU) within UNESCO, all YDÜ programs are recognized by T.C. YÖK and KKTC YÖDAK.
