Judges and magistrates arbitrate, advise, decide, or administer justice in a court of law. In criminal cases, they may sentence the defendant according to government laws or criminal guidelines. In civil cases, they may determine the defendant's liability. They may perform marriage ceremonies. In Turkey, judgeship requires graduating from law school and passing the judgeship exam.
